Jubilee Debt Campaign is the successor to Jubilee 2000, an international movement which brought together more than 25 million people to campaign for an end to unpayable international debt. Jubilee 2000 organised the 70,000 strong human chain around the G8 in Birmingham in 1998 and Jubilee Debt Campaign has carried on the good work organising 'A Day to Remember' in Birmingham in 2003 and carrying on the campaign urging world leaders to drop the debt and give developing countries a chance.

There is a Birmingham Jubilee Debt Campaign group which will provide support and resources for activity. Volunteers should be interested in the debt issue and interested in campaigning.

1. University networker

Aim: to work with groups across the University to raise awareness of the international debt issue and to plan activity and action around it.

Activity: Working with faith groups, People and Planet, political groups and other guild organisations to tackle the debt issue and gain support in and outside the university. Perhaps organising events linked to the University or JDC calendar.

Skills needed and developed: great written and verbal communication; powers of persuasion; alliance building; giving presentations; networking; meetings.

Time: at least one day a month, expenses (travel and subsistence) will be provided.

2. University media officer

Aim: working closely with the networker, this role will develop the profile of Jubilee Debt Campaign through the University's media: print and broadcast.

Activity: to find out about campus activity and publicise it through a media strategy targeting the University's media, including writing press releases, researching information and giving radio interviews. Also getting coverage for the general issue of debt.

Skills needed and developed: excellent written and verbal communication; confidence; research; presentation.

Time: at least one day a month, expenses (travel and subsistence) will be provided.

3. Media officer

Aim: working with the Birmingham Jubilee Debt Campaign group to publicise its activity and campus activity on campus to the wider Birmingham and West Midlands' media.

Activity: working with the local JDC group to develop press releases, photo opportunities and liaise with the local and regional media to secure print and broadcast coverage. Arranging interviews for JDC spokespeople and perhaps giving radio interviews.

Skills needed and developed: excellent verbal and written communication; press release writing; media liaison; interview; public relations.

Time: at least one day a month, expenses (travel and subsistence) will be provided.
